  1. Your projects. Your categories. Organised with tags. One list is wonderfully easy to start with. But your life isn't just one subject. There's work, things at home, and projects with several jobs of their own. If you're used to lists or buckets, tags give you that way of grouping things. You choose the projects and categories, then bring the relevant tasks into view when you need them.
  2. Start a project. Let’s build a shed.Let's start a project. We're going to build a shed. First, something we can actually do: measure the garden. Capture that task, just as before.
  3. Open the task menu. Now let's connect it to the project. Open this task's menu.
  4. Choose Tags…And choose Tags. We're changing the tags on this task, not filtering the whole list.
  5. Type Build a shed.Call the tag Build a shed. You could just as easily use a category like Home or Work. The name only has to make sense to you.
  6. Create the new tag.Create it, and it's attached to the task straight away. That tag is now available for the other jobs in the shed project too.
  7. Use the pencil to edit the tag.Let's make it a little easier to spot. The pencil beside the tag opens its settings.
  8. Choose a colour for Build a shed.Pick a colour so you can spot it easily.
  9. Save the tag, then close the popup.Save the tag. That colour belongs to the tag itself, so you'll recognise related tasks.
  10. Your task now has its own coloured tag.And back to the list. The task hasn't moved somewhere obscure. It's still here, now connected to its project.
  11. Add two tasks for work.Let's add a couple of work jobs as well: review the proposal, and send the weekly update. They're ordinary new tasks for now. We'll give them their category ourselves.
  12. Give Review the proposal a category.Start with the proposal. Open its menu, just as we did for the shed task.
  13. Choose Tags…Choose Tags again. This picker belongs to the proposal.
  14. Create a category called Work. This time, type Work. We're making a broader category, rather than a particular project.
  15. Create Work.Create Work, and the proposal is tagged. The change saves immediately.
  16. Work is saved on the proposal.Close the picker. There's Work beside the proposal, ready to recognise in the list.
  17. Use Work on the second task too.The weekly update belongs with it. Open that task's menu next.
  18. Open this task’s Tags. Then open its Tags. We can use the category we've just made.
  19. Select the existing Work tag.Select 'Work' from the existing tags.
  20. Both tasks now share Work.Done. Both tasks now share Work because we've chosen it for each of them. Nothing was assigned automatically.
  21. Want to focus on work? Open Tags beside Search. Now suppose you're sitting down to do some work. Open Tags beside Search. This is the view filter, rather than an individual task's tag picker.
  22. Select Work.Choose Work, and those are the tasks you see. The shed and the household jobs haven't been deleted. They're simply outside the view you've chosen for this moment.
  23. Clear the filter to see everything again.Clear the filter, and everything is back. That's the useful distinction: organise once, then look at the part of your life you need, without moving tasks between separate places.
  24. Your tasks, organised. Now give them dates. So you've got projects, you've got categories, and you've still got one place to keep track of things. Next we'll add dates, and let Focus help with the question that really matters: what needs attention now?
